The Gospel Old & New

This is a brilliant article by Kevin DeYoung looking at what is becoming an increasingly popular way to talk about the Gospel. It is in response to a recent interview with Shane Claiborne in Esquire.

DeYoung observes that there is a pattern:

  1. It usually starts with an apology.
  2. Then there is an appeal to God as love.
  3. Thirdly there is an invitation to join God on His mission in the world.
  4. Finally there is ambivalence about eternity.

What are the problems with this? Read on to find out.

Kevin DeYoung is one of my favorite pastors to read. He is thoughtful, generous, and Biblical. Where many guys (like myself) might be quick to clumsily draw their swords, he patiently dissects a situation. In this blog he offers a warm critique - if there ever was one - of some recent comments made by Rob Bell.
