Keep Up With Us During A Hiatus
Here’s the deal; between work, life, & ministries, we have to put The Modern Post on hold indefinitely.
But, you can still keep up with us individually.
Ralph is a graphic designer, and is training to be a pastor and on the Uganda team at Rockharbor Church.
Dustin is a singer by trade, as well as leads worship and the college group at his church.
Nick is on the Media &...

6 Teaching Tips From Martin Luther
When you see the word “preacher” below, feel free to plug in your role(s) - are you a husband responsible for leading his family, a parent responsible for teaching your children, a baseball coach, a community group or Bible study leader, a high school teacher, or a Christian who wants to read their Bible better?
“A preacher should be a logician and a rhetorician, that is, he...

Is it always what we are 'for' that counts?
In the last few years many people within the faith have critiqued Christianity - more in particular evangelicalism - for being more about ‘what they are against than what they are for’. There is some truth in that. It is always dangerous when a political party, social activism, or a cause becomes more important than the Gospel.
But at the same time, we do have to draw some lines in...

10 Things You Can Do With The Gospel
It’s great to be reminded of how much is packed into two verses you might otherwise glaze over. How often do we do any of these?
“Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain.”—1 Corinthians 15:1-2

5 Problems Facing the Church by Tim Keller →
Click the title to see the full article.
4. The growing cultural remoteness of the gospel. The basic concepts of the gospel — sin, guilt and accountability before God, the sacrifice of the cross, human nature, afterlife — are becoming culturally strange in the west for the first time in 1500 years. As Lesslie Newbigin has written, it is time now to ‘think like a...

Husks & Ashes
Most men are not satisfied with the permanent output of their lives. Nothing can wholly satisfy the life of Christ within his followers except the adoption of Christ’s purpose toward the world he came to redeem. Fame, pleasure and riches are but husks and ashes in contrast with the boundless and abiding joy of working with God for the fulfillment of his eternal plans. The men who are putting...

An Army of Busy Beavers
Another substitute for discipleship I would mention (though these do not exhaust the list) is zealous religious activity.
Working for Christ has today been accepted as the ultimate test of godliness among all but a few evangelical Christians. Christ has become a project to be promoted or a cause to be served instead of a Lord to be obeyed. Thousands of mistaken persons seek to do for Christ...

Pouring Water Into the Sea
This are excerpts from a letter from Martin Luther to his good friend Philip Melanchton. We all need friends who can speak to us with Gospel truth and Gospel promises when we are afraid, weak, or anxious. Thanks to Justin Taylor for posting this.

Evidence Of A Weightless God
Last week the PEW Forum released a study on religion among the Millenials (those aged 18-29). Here are some of the findings.
52% of Evangelicals ages 18-29 believe there is more than one way to heaven.
79% of Mainline Protestants ages 18-29 believe there is more than one way to heaven.
43% of Evangelicals ages 18-29 believe Christianity is the only way to heaven.
18% of Mainline...

Luther's Strong Words For Bloggers & Authors
The multitude of books is a great evil. There is no measure or limit to this fever for writing; every one must be an author; some out of vanity, to acquire celebrity and raise up a name; others for the sake of lucre and gain. The Bible is now buried under so many commentaries, that the text is nothing regarded. I could wish all my books were buried nine ells deep in the ground, by reason of the...

The Gospel Old & New →
This is a brilliant article by Kevin DeYoung looking at what is becoming an increasingly popular way to talk about the Gospel. It is in response to a recent interview with Shane Claiborne in Esquire.
DeYoung observes that there is a pattern:
It usually starts with an apology.
Then there is an appeal to God as love.
Thirdly there is an invitation to join God on His mission in the world.

Alienation to Adoption (part 2)
This is the second post in a series on reconciliation. In the first post we looked at the Biblical basis of reconciliation and in this post we’ll look at some common misunderstandings of it.
How can reconciliation be misunderstood?
The religious person, like the proud Pharisee in Luke 18, underestimates his sin. He does not consider how Paul describes us as dead, alienated, enemies or...

Alienation to Adoption (part 1)
The Biblical concept of reconciliation is a word we might skip by or a concept we’ll give lip service to, but do we really understand it?
Paul talks about reconciliation in 2 Corinthians 5:16-21, Ephesians 2:11-18, Colossians 1:15-23, and Romans 5:6-11. To better understand the Biblical concept we can learn a lot by simply looking at the language and words Paul uses.
How does he describe us...

Interested in a pastor who regularly quotes from the likes of Nietzsche, Jefferson, and CS Lewis in the same sermon? He’s an orthodox Christian who believes in evolution. He emulates the Puritan...

The Way and the Wayward (Part 1 of 3)
John the Baptist was a fiery character. The Pharisees and Sadducees were threatened by him and for good reason. He had amassed a large following in the desert so, naturally, they were worried about his influence and power. They wondered who he was and what he was doing. The gospel of Luke tell us in chapter 3:
3And he went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of...

Dead.
Dead. What does this word convey to us? Have you seen a dead person in a casket, or come upon a dead animal in the woods? It is obvious that they are not about to take another breath, or reach out to us, or get up and walk away. The man in the casket is cold and lifeless and most definitely not present. The animal’s eyes are glazed and empty and flies buzz greedily around them. This is...

Dr. Bruce Ware is the Professor of Christian Theology at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. I recently got to sit down with him for The Resurgence and talk to him about the missional christology class he just taught to our ReTrain students at Mars Hill.
I really liked what he had to say about submission in the Trinity and how that had practical implications.

This is one of those stories that slips under the radar…
“”A thorough examination revealed that the coins bore the year in which they were minted and their value, or effigies of the pharaohs [who ruled] at the time of their minting. Some of the coins are from the time when Joseph lived in Egypt, and bear his name and portrait,” said the report.”

Kevin DeYoung is one of my favorite pastors to read. He is thoughtful, generous, and Biblical. Where many guys (like myself) might be quick to clumsily draw their swords, he patiently dissects a situation. In this blog he offers a warm critique - if there ever was one - of some recent comments made by Rob Bell.
